How do civil war reenactments work?
Whenever I watch civil war movies and live reenactments, I wonder how they do it. How do they decide who gets "killed", and who bolts and runs, or whatever. Is it some kind of Honor system?
In general, I just want to know as much as you can tell me about how civil war reenactments are organized, and how they work out.
Reenactments in terms of staging an actual battle are scripted following similar manuvers that were used during the actual battle, with the exception of time constraints and the amount of "soldiers" you can put on the field. Taking a "hit" or becoming a casualty is usually done at the individuals discreation. However, if heavy casualties are expected during a particular scenario ie if the reencatment involves a battle scene where heavy casualties are expected (Hornets Nest, Maryes Heights, Picketts Charge) then most already know and its staged accordingly.
Tactical scenarios, or just "burning powder" are organized by both Union and Confederate commanders before the reenactment, and are done for spectators at smaller events.
Straying from these scripted or pre determined battles is a serious safety infraction, real weapons are used during these battles including the cannon, horses, muskets, swords everything except the projectile's and engagement rules are established well in advance of the actual event, with weapons inspections happening before each individual battle.
Of course reenactors drill with each other not only as part of the reenactment, but its also a safety measure amoung the individual units much like the real military where the buddy system makes sure each reenactor is hydrated, fed, and rested for a 8hr battle in a virgin wool uniform on a 4th of july weekend.
In additon to all the historic aspects of the reenactment, there are also logistical concerns, and behind the scenes stuff going on for both the reenactors and the visitors, Port a Johns, Water for both men and horses, hay, straw, fire wood, are all provided by the event organizers and distributed by an army of four wheelers, tractors, and golf carts along with Ambulances, Police to maintain traffic safety (ie in terms of Gettysburg it can take a week for all the reenactors to drive in and start setting up camp) and preserve order. Also depending on the wishes of the political sub division where the reenactment is held, safety reports are carboned for the reenactor "command" but also to local police or sherif.
Registration personell, most reenactors register for an event before the first of the year. This is done as another safety measure to ensure that all reenactors are affiliated with a specific unit.
